MIRACLE PLAYS, MUSIC AND POETRY

Other dramatic ways of presenting Jesus to people were the miracle or mystery plays. Scenes from the Bible or legends of the saints were acted in the open air, often on carts and put on by town guilds. The most popular subject was the passion of Christ but other incidents from the stories of his life were also performed. Sometimes the whole story from creation to the Last Judgment was divided up into a sequence or cycle of plays with particular pageants allocated to appropriate guilds. So, for example, the Bakers performed The Last Supper, the Pinners [nail makers] The Crucifixion and the Butchers The Death of Christ. The oldest and best preserved of these mystery plays are those from York which date from the second half of the 14 th century when the city had recovered from the Black Death of 1349. Some of Jesus' speeches are very moving. For example, in The Death of Christ, Jesus speaks from the cross. He says:

With intense suffering have I paid like this to heal thy sin.

Never cease to look on me, how willingly I bend [surrender?] my body.

No one in this world could imagine what sorrow I suffer for you.

Make sure my kindness is well known.

Take me as your true home and trust for foxes have their dens and birds their nests but the Son of Man today has nowhere to rest his head.
